Turn, Turn,
Turn: A Time to Spin, A Time to Weave
The theme of the show is an opportunity to reflect on time and change. As the
song says, “To everything turn, turn, turn. There is a season, turn, turn,
turn, and a time for every purpose under Heaven.” Set aside some time,
decide on your purpose, and spin or weave something wondrous!

Judging
Standards – Weaving
- Design. This
criterion is made up of three separate elements:
Color
and Pattern
- The design has been
thought through to its conclusion
- The design shows good
rhythm, variation, and repetition
- The overall design
holds together in a pleasing manner
- There is a plan for
color which offers a flow and reason for its use
Suitability/Appropriateness
- Choice of yarn, weave
structure, and technique are in keeping with requirements for
durability, care, drape, hand, and weight of the entry’s stated
or implied purpose
Creativity
- Offers an
individualized approach to the use of the material
- Offers innovative or
well-aligned treatment of a known technique
- Craftsmanship
- Technique is well
executed
- Attention to details,
such as edges
- Contains no weaving
errors
- Finishing. This
criterion encompasses cloth finishing, edge finishing, and
article construction.
- The finish is well
executed and is appropriate for the technique and the entry’s
stated or implied purpose
- The fabric was
properly finished before the garment or article was constructed
- The edge finish is in
keeping with the technique and weave structure
- Any hanging device is
in character with the entry and is not distracting
- Any added elements are
in keeping with the entry’s stated or implied purpose and its
overall design
- Judge’s Discretion.
This category provides the judge with an opportunity to add or
deduct points for subjective elements present in the piece.
These points should be used sparingly, with an eye toward the
fairest overall rating for each entry.
Judging Standards – Spinning:
- Preparation and
Suitability: the fibers chosen are properly prepared, durable,
and suitable for the spun fiber’s intended purpose
- Diameter: the diameter
of the spun fiber is appropriate for its intended purpose
- Uniformity: the spun
fiber is consistently even, deliberately textural, controlled
- Yarn Finishing: the
twist is set and is appropriate for its intended purpose
- Overall: the
appearance of the spun fiber is visually pleasing in color,
texture, and hand
